To Serve and Protect?
Police brutality in Baltimore |
Officers almost always get away with it |
When we think of police we see men and women dressed in uniform here to protect us. Stopping crime and serving the community. But unfortunately this is not always what happens, take the case of Rodney King for example. He was on parole, and had drank some beers with friends. He wasn’t suppose to be drinking so when a police car pulled up behind him he ran. He ended up in an apratment complex being beaten by 4 police officers. He was struck over 50 times and shocked with an electric tazer. Cases like that of Rodney King are more common than thought to be. Another victim of this misconduct was Javier Ovando.
Javier Ovando was a Honduran man
who was a former member of the 18th street gang. Police officers
Durden and Pérez entered 19-year old Javier's apartment on October 12th,
leaving him paralyzed by gun shots. In an attempt to not get caught they
planted the gun on Javier, saying that he shot at them first. Javier was
sentenced to 23 years in a federal penitentary. Once he was released from
prison he was granted $15 million,
but this nothing compared to loosing his legs.
According to CopBlock.org since 2009 there have been over 6,000
acts of misconduct, nealry 600 of those acts resulted in a death. Also, this is
only in America, think about the amount of brutality in other countries, not to
mention the ones where the officers get off scott free. In Montana, the state
with the most police brutality, an average of 3 acts of misconducts occur every
week. People are beaten every day, but when the men and women who were suppose
to protect us , turn on us, its just horrible.

Anthony, another great article demonstrating the equalize frame. This article definitely forces a reader to think about what police officers should be allowed to do and when they can use necessary force.
