Budget cuts, those two words could change everything in our community especially the way your child learns. On May 1st, the Beaverton School District released the final statement. They are cutting 40 million dollars from the schools along with 314 teachers.
Due to budget cuts 314 teachers will lose their job. |
"That's terrible", says Madeline from Blue Hall, "40 million dollars is way too much and I don't think 314 teachers deserve to lose their job. Maybe a few, but not that many teachers should lose their job because of this. I think that number should be split in half".
Just from Stoller alone we are in danger of losing 9.5 teachers/staff members. Our classes will increase dramatically due to this budget cut. Already in Mr. Wilsie's 3rd core algebra class there are 39 students. By next year that number will be closer to 43. Although that may not seem like a lot to some students, they will be losing out valuable one on one time with their teachers.
"Classes will be different next year, they will increase by about 4 students each, just at Stoller alone. This will keep me from getting through all the grading and one on one time I like to do with my students", says Mrs. Dietrich from Red Hall. "Classes will potentially more than one would expect."
Classes will increase by 2-4 students (depending on the school) and activities during class like science labs will be less frequent.
"Some labs I look forward to doing each year might not take place next year, our labs are diminishing along with learning experiences", says science teacher Mrs. Birge. Mr. Vernon said, "Due to budget cuts we will not be able to buy gym supplies that that we need for following years, such as new basketballs and wall balls".
By next year the districts budget cut plan will take on full effect, bringing forward obstacles in your students learning path. No one can predict what the outcome will be. We will just have to wait and see.
