4 Die on Mount Everest after Summiting

4 Die on Mount Everest after Summiting
By Alexa Morales
Word Count: 335

After summiting the tallest mountain in the world, an 8,848 meter summit, four people died. Their deaths were tragic and very saddening. They died coming down from the south slope of the mountain the weekend after they all summited. The victims were just recently identified. One of them is Ebehard Schaaf, 61 years old and was a German medical doctor. Another one of the bodies is Sryia Shah, 33 years old and was a Nepali-born Canadian woman. The third one is identified as Song Wondin, a 44 year old male from South Korea. The last body is of Wen Ryi Ha, a 55 year old male from China.
Recent climbers climbing down from the top of the mountain said that they saw the body of the Korean. Earlier, the Korean was reported missing on the mountain. There were also of a Nepali missing as well, but those reports were not verified. The Germans death was a very tragic and painful one. He was diagnosed and passed away from high-altitude cerebral edema. Mountaineers often expand all their energy while ascending the mountain and do not think about the energy that they need to climb down the mountain. As a result, they become weaker and suffer from altitude sickness. Saturday was also windier than the usual weather on Everest. Mountaineers climbing Everest just started summiting the mountain from the south side this spring season only since Saturday. That’s about ten days later than usual and it was due to very bad and dangerous weather to climb in. With these four deaths, the number of people killed on Everest has reached six just this year alone. Two Nepali Sherpa’s died on the mountain earlier this month.
“This is very tragic and also a very sad loss to their families” states Melanie Harrell, a 7th grade student at Stoller Middle School.
“Hearing about this makes me very sad, especially because it wasn’t their fault that they passed away” said Courtney Gardner, a 7th grade student at Stoller Middle School.

Mount Everest. The beautiful but dangerous mountain.

15 AND DRIVING?!?....it's alright :)

This demonstrates a very responsible young driver
15 AND DRIVING?!?....it’s alright :)

By Emily Purkey

Imagine being in traffic, not a good thought I know. Imagine the car in front of you just kicks his foot on the breaks and comes to a sudden halt. You try to stop but the car in front of you was just too swift. You hit the car in front of you but it was clearly his fault for not putting his brake lights on. You both get out of your cars and you find out the driver in front of you was a 15 year old boy!
There is much controversy whether or not teenagers that young should be driving, even if there is an adult in the passenger seat. Personally, I am all for teenagers driving, everyone has to start driving it’s when you choose to start driving that’s important. You could start driving when you’re 15 or when you’re 40 and your technique will practically be the same. Quoted from Dan Purkey, “If they are responsible citizens, they get good grades, they do their studies, they respect their parents, they drive defensively, and they pass their driving tests by studying then they deserve to drive.” Also, it’s not like kids just go and start driving without any instructions or practice. They pass multiple tests that require studying and practice courses.
Older people shouldn’t judge young people just because they are new drivers, they should accept that there will always be young people driving. Another thing, it’s not just young people that get tickets and get in accidents, it’s all sorts of people, young people, old people, and middle aged people. If anything, young drivers should look out for older drivers. Since older drivers have been driving for a long time they are not as cautious as newer younger drivers. Younger drivers are more aware because they are nervous. If there is a pedestrian, the young driver is aware and watching him/her, an older driver would think they have the right away and just drive. If a stop light is yellow a younger driver would slow down and stop, an older driver would most likely take a risk and run through that yellow light.
It just goes to show don’t judge a book by it’s cover, don’t assume, and any other cliques you can think of. Be nice to younger drivers, they are our driving future.

Derrick Rose's Torn ACL

Derrick Rose's Torn ACL

Derrick Rose came down from a shot holding his left knee

As Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls went in for a shot and came down holding his left knee, the arena went silent. Thousands of thoughts rushed through the worried fans heads. With 1:10 left in the 4th quarter and a 12 point lead against the 76ers, many are still wondering why Rose was even in the game.  He was helped off the court after scoring 23 points in the first game of the series. “My heart kind of dropped,” said guard Rip Hamilton. After the fans and players finally adjusted to the news of Derrick Roses torn ACL and him being out for the rest of the season, they began to worry about the long term damage. The ACL is one of the ligaments in the knee joint that connects the upper leg bone to the lower leg bone to keep the knee stable.  A torn ACL can take up to 6-8 months to heal. It is very difficult to avoid tearing your ACL in sports and it’s happened to many players.
On September 26, 2009 after getting tackled by Northwestern State's Gary Riggs, Robert Griffin lll of the Baylor Bears went limping to the sidelines. An MRI after the game confirmed that Griffin had torn his ACL and would be out for the rest of the 2009 season. Derrick Rose will be out for the rest of the playoffs and most likely the first couple months of the 2013 season. "You never want to see anyone get injured, especially a player of his caliber," Dwayne Wade of the Miami Heat said. "Very unfortunate. You hope he does his best to rehab and gets back to being the D-Rose that everyone loves."
There’s no denying the fact that Rose’s injury will be affecting the Bulls chances of making it through the playoffs. While some think that the Bulls will do just fine without Rose, others believe the complete opposite. Rose was one of their star players, averaging 22 points, 4 rebounds and 7 assists per game. "Of course, we're praying that he's all right but we know that we can play ball without Derrick, as well,” says center Joakim Noah. Due to back, groin, toe and ankle injuries during the regular season, Derrick Rose started in only 39 of the Bull’s 66 games. Even though Rose was out for quite a bit of the season, the Bull’s still managed to enter the playoffs with the first spot in the eastern conference.

Is Taco Bell meat real?
On Manohitha.com, there was a section talking about how Taco Bell meat was not real and how it is false advertisement. Rumors have started that their ground beef isn't exactly filet mignon. "Taco Bell isn't currently legally allowed to saved many cities because the quality is too low" said food officials. Taco Bell says that their meat is 88% real beef and 36% fake. 10% of that 36% that is fake is made mostly out of spices and water. Libby Graalum(7th grader at Stoller Middle School) says " The meat is only partially real and the fake part is made of mostly plastic and other gross things". Julia K. explained to me how a lady from the u.s. took a meal from several different fast food restaurants and kept them in her fridge for a year, None of which molded. That comes to a conclusion that Taco Bell's meat and other fast food restaurant's meat is made up of things that are not healthy for your body and should not be served to local communities. The u.s. already is struggling with obesity and the last thing we need in our country is another source of unhealthy surroundings.

This is what you are putting into your body when you eat at Taco Bell.

Budget cuts in Portland

In early April, the Portland Public Schools board and Superintendent Carole Smith announced that across the district, 110 teaching positions were to be cut before the 2012-13 school year begins. This news has shocked many parents, teachers, and students, and some are still recovering from the $20 million budget reduction last year. In high schools, this could possibly result of the loss of entire departments and increases in class sizes, which would shorten the abilities of even the most capable teacher.

Public rage has led to accusing and asking “How could this happen to our children’s schools?” The answer is in the source of the district’s budget, a combo of local, state and federal funding that was thrown off balance by a certain number of misguided ballot measures passed during the peak time of the Oregon taxing in the 1990s. It all started with the ratification of Measure 5 in 1990, a change to our state Constitution which would take property taxes, a major source of school financing at 1.5 percent and the burden of school funding from local to state government. This would majorly decrease the amount of tax revenue available to the district, but worse was still to come. Bill Sizemore, the famed Oregon political activist who pleaded guilty to three felony counts of tax evasion last year, proposed the passage of Measure 47 in 1996, a ballot initiative that would further decrease statewide property taxes by 10 percent and limit annual property value appreciation to 3 percent.

Measure 47, also known as the "cut and cap law," would continue to exacerbate the tailspin of PPS' funding and increase the district's annual budget deficit. After being only further reinforced by the subsequent enactment of Measure 50 the following year, Portland Public Schools has found itself in increasingly dire straits. If denunciations will be made, someone should consider that it isn’t the superintendent or the school board that has created this situation, but rather the electorate who decided that it valued the amount of its money over their children's education.

But all is not lost. Thanks to the democratic structure of our state and federal government, we can use the same system that allowed these laws to be passed to ensure that they are repealed. I’m a middle school student, and I have a feeling that there will be higher class sizes and less courses will occur again next year.

Cow Farts to Blame????

Cow Farts to Blame.....

By:Briana Keo-Williams

This picture is from http://purefixion.com/attention/cow.GIF
You all know that CO2, fossil fuels, and methane gas are contributions to global warming and vehicles cause 60% of America’s air pollution but it’s not only the normal stuff causing global warming but cow’s farts and burps too. Imagine being a cow and the worlds mad at you because your farts are causing 30% of America’s contribution to global warming!!!!! Farting is caused by when you swallow air as you talk and eat. Once the air is “digested” it isn’t useful so the body just pushes it out making farts and burps. How does this related to global warming? As most of you know farts and burps contain a gas called methane which is harmful to the ozone is a large amount. Methane falls into the greenhouse gases category.
A scientific study in California has proven that a dairy cow produces an average of 20 pounds of gas per year. “People should just cut down on their beef intake. Plus you can feed more people with crops then you can with cows” Mallory Hoffbeck. “Well they graze the grass and give us fertilizer, dairy product and meats. Global Warming is mainly caused by us so why should they be to blame. Even though they produce methane they give us everyday products that we consume.” Kristina Mokalla. Scientists haven’t been able to calculate the amount of the amount of methane in farts but they do believe it has an impact on the environment ,for all we know it could be entirely our fault.

Jered Weaver’s perfect game!

                                                   Jered Weaver’s perfect game!
                                                   L.A Angels vs Minnesota Twins
                                                   MLB: Wednesday May, 2 2012
                                                          By: Tristen Walker

On Wednesday May 2, 2012 the L.A Angels were facing the Minnesota Twins at Anaheim stadium in L.A California. He pitched an excellent game on Wednesday against the Twins. He only allowed two baserunners the entire evening. One of those baserunners was Chris Parmelee, who reached only after he struck out and the ball got past Chris Iannetta. Weaver dominated the Twins hitters from start to finish. The final out, Alexi Casillas long fly ball to right field caught by a former Twin Torii Hunter, was one of the few hard-hit balls the Twins had throughout the memorable night. Weaver struck out nine and walked one. He has pitched the second no-hitter in the majors in less than two weeks. Weaver is 4-0 in his last four starts and off to a great season. The Twins haven’t had a hit in the last 15 innings. Weaver threw 121 pitches, and the cheers from the crowd of 27,288 kept growing louder. I think this article means to contextualize. Weaver pitched an amazing game. I think that he did a really good job and he's one of my favorite pitchers. He is having a solid start at the first of the season. The defense behind weaver when Weaver pitches is pretty amazing to watch. The last perfect game was by Phil Humber of the Chicago White Sox threw a perfect game against the Seattle Mariners on April 21st. Overall I think that Weaver is a solid good pitcher and I think that he could pitch more perfect games later in the year.

Job Disappointment

Everyone knows that the economy has been very bad and that unemployment rates have been up.  Recenty jobs have been increasing, and the problem has been lessening.  Between May 2011 and January of 2012 1,288,000 jobs were added, averaging 143,111 jobs added per month. The trend was promising as more jobs were being added each month but recently that trend has flipped upside down.

After 275,000 jobs were added in January and 259,000 were added in February, March and April have been rather disappointing. Only 154,000 jobs were added in March and it was still worse in April when only 115,000 jobs were added in the month. “April’s job growth was less than economists had been predicting.” This is very bad for America’s population, since there are not enough jobs and not enough are being added. “We should be seeing numbers in the 500,000 jobs created per month...This is way, way, way off from what should happen in a normal recovery,” said Mitt Romney, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

Paul Ashworth, chief United States economist for Capital Economics, said that “My guess is the weather made job growth look too strong in the first couple of months, and now it looks too weak as payback for the warm winter weather.” This reveals that the months that seemed to reflect positive job growth were really an inaccurate reflection of the reality of the American job situation.

The bottom line in the story of U.S. jobs is simple and easy to understand. There are not enough jobs currently in the U.S. for how many people there are that need jobs.  Also not enough more jobs are being created to fix this problem fast enough.  This all adds up to the reality that more jobs need to be added, and they must be added quickly to recover from the economic downfall we have been stuck in for far too long.

The fascinating, art piece, by Edvard Munch.
   1895 Pastel ‘The Scream’, Sold

By: Dulce Sanabria

The trembling bidders are anxiously waiting for the lucky new owner of the amazing, 1895 pastel artwork, ‘The Scream’, by Edvard Munch, to be announced. The bidding session lasted 12 dreading, long minutes.
The bid had a start price of $40M. That was just the starting price! There were seven bidders in total. The seven competitors kept on raising their offerings for the artwork until finally, the price ended at $120M. The winner of the auction is anonymous but, according to the source I got my information from, the version sold was the most colorful.
This version, out of all the four, was said to be the only version to include a poem on the frame about the his inspiration. One of the lines from the poem read “I was walking along a path with two friends - the sun was setting - suddenly the sky turned blood red - I paused, feeling exhausted, and leaned on the fence - there was blood and tongues of fire above the blue-black fjord and the city.”
The previous record for the price an art piece was sold for at auction, was $106.5M. This was Picasso’s ‘Nude’, ‘Green Leaves’, and ‘Bust’. These were sold in 2010, but as you can see, ‘The Scream’ broke that record with flying colors. ‘The Scream’ didn’t only break that astonishing record but is now, the 8th most expensive piece of art!
Many people are fans of this colorful, full of expression pastel. The person hosting the auction, Tobias Meyer, boasted that the work the auction was held for was “ Worth every penny”.

Obama's Trip to Afghanistan

President Obama meets with troops

Obama’s Trip to Afghanistan
By: Kristina Mokalla

Almost midnight I arrived from Air Force One. All of us landed in Afghanistan at 10:20 at the base. We were planning to arrive at late night and leave before dawn.

Me and Hamid Zarzai, Afghanistan’s President, signed the Strategic Partnership Agreement in Kabul. This is a document that’s supposed to build the U.S. and Afghanistan relationship for ten years to come.

“Neither Americans nor the Afghan people asked for this war, yet for a decade we’ve stood together. Today, with the signing of the Strategic Partnership Agreement, we look forward to a future of peace. Today, we’re agreeing to be long-term partners,” I was saying.

General John Allen talked to almost 3,000 service members. I spoke to the troops after. I thanked them for their service and told them the entire nation is behind them.

I said, “I know it’s still tough. I know the battle’s not yet over. Some of your buddies are going to get injured and some of your buddies may get killed and there’s going to be heartbreak and pain and difficulty ahead. But there’s a light on the horizon because of the sacrifices you’ve made.”

“We did not choose this war. This war came to us on 9/11. And there are a whole bunch of folks who signed up after 9/11. We don’t go looking for a fight. But when we see our homeland violated, when we see our fellow citizens killed, then we understand what we have to do.”

“Slowly and systematically, we have been able to decimate the ranks of al Qaeda. And a year ago, we were able to finally bring Osama bin Laden to justice.”

I spent 45 minutes shaking hands and taking photos with brave troops.

I addressed the nation from Afghanistan and about ten minutes later we left before dawn.

Doctors Should not Treat Family Members
By Brian Kim

Imagine you are a highly skilled surgeon that has never once failed a surgery. Later your best friend got in a car accident and needs surgery now. You want to do surgery on your best friend or will will you let the other surgeon commence. This is a problem is what Dr. Sanders had and later his grandson died in the operation room.

“someone outside the family should do the surgery because it’s too hard to separate work and emotions” Ms. Clements. This is what doctors around the world face. Would you perform surgery or would let surgery be performed by other surgeons.”It depends on how complicated of the surgery” quote Ms. Clements. This could be true, If you had a baby born or it wasn't life threatening then it should be okay for the doctor to treat their family member. But if it was complicated and life at risk then the related should not treat them.

72% of surgeons admitted that they have done physical examination on their own family member.15 has acted as their primary doctor and nine % have performed surgery. This is not scratches no these are surgery need to be done. People Think that there should be a law that doctors should not treat their family or unless it is not a life threatening danger then it should be fine. Though if they need surgery now and no one is ready then the surgeon may perform. Then another thing is emotion in this. If your fiance need surgery and you were totally over her then you would want to perform surgery but you may think it’s easy to choose to let other doctors choose but when emotion covers your head then you can make wrong decisions.

Dentist Pulls Out All of Ex's Teeth

Dentist Pulls Out All of Ex’s Teeth

Just a normal dentist
If you had just dumped your girlfriend or boyfriend for someone else would you schedule a dentist appointment with them as your dentist? No, probably not. But this guy did. Not very smart right?

Marek Olszewski made an appointment with his dentist because of a toothache. Only problem is, his dentist is his ex-girlfriend that he dumped just days ago for another girl. He let her give him anesthetic so “it wouldn’t hurt”. When he woke up he said “I knew something was wrong because when I woke up I couldn’t feel any teeth and my jaw was strapped up with bandages,” but she just said that he couldn’t feel his teeth because he was still numb. She also said that the bandage was there to protect his gums, but he would need to see a specialist.

He didn’t actually realize anything was wrong until he got home and looked in the mirror. There were no teeth in his mouth. He couldn’t even believe it at first, he thought he was seeing things. But, he wasn’t. His ex-girlfriend had pulled out all of his teeth. He was so mad and he didn’t know what to do about it! "I didn’t have any reason to doubt her; I mean I thought she was a professional," he said after he realized that she had taken out all his teeth. And, to make everything worse, his new girlfriend that he dumped his old one for, didn’t want to be with him if he had no teeth. So, he lost his old girlfriend, new girlfriend, and his teeth all within about a week. The lesson is not to let your girlfriend give you a shot of anesthetic right after you dumped her.

Muslim Discrimination At Airports: Racist and Wrong

You're at the airport, in the security scanning line. It’s the turn of the man in front of you to walk through the body scanner, but after he walks out, the airport security people pull him aside and start asking him questions. They check his luggage and tell him to follow them into a room to be patted down. The man looks hurt and confused. You wonder why they pulled that man aside, and not anyone else.

Girl Protesting Anti-Muslim Discrimination
The answer? He is a Muslim. This is Muslim discrimination, something that is racist and wrong.

There would have never been a discrimination in the first place, if it wasn't mainly for Al- Qaeda. This all started on September 11, 2001, the infamous date of end of the Twin Towers, and the lives of thousands of people. Al-Qaeda, a global militant Islamist organization founded by Osama bin Laden, was the group that was responsible for this tragedy. All the members of Al-Qaeda were Muslim, the leader of the terrorist group being Osama bin Laden. The United States government believes that the presence of 5,000 troops in Saudi Arabia and the Iraq sanctions were the reasons for their attack of the twin towers. The members of Al-Qaeda hijacked 4 planes and crashed them into the North and South towers of the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and attemped to crash into the Capitol Building, but crashed into a field in Pennsylvania due to the passengers fighting back.

Since then, 9/11 has really affected the muslims and airport security. The government created the Transportation Security Administration, and hired over 60,000 people to screen passengers and their baggage at 450 U.S. airports. Muslims are pulled aside from the security screening line and are checked thoroughly, out of the fear of them being a terrorist.

I asked an anonymous Muslim 7th grader attending Stoller Middle School, what she thought about Muslim discrimination at airports-she had a lot to say:

“It is extremely racist. I know many Muslims, more than maybe eighty - explicitly saying, that they understand why the airport’s actions are so racist, but they do NOT agree with the methods of fixing the problem of terrorism, and hate that they are discriminated for their belief. Terrorists who define themselves as Muslim, take teachings to a whole new level of extreme. They disregard very hard rules like suicide not being allowed. Americans have to worry about their lives but Muslims have to worry about that as well as being thought of as a “traitor” by the terrorists. So...we get the hate from the terrorists and the Americans. The airport is not the only place where I have experienced racism and hatred. I could walk down the street and get dirty looks near the place that a large community of Muslims and I pray, and even somewhere completely random like...Michaels! We DO NOT spend every minute of our lives making bombs. Or plotting against Americans! We even avoid saying the word, ‘bomb’. I was born here and love living here...I just hate the discrimination. It hurts.”

People like the 7th grader I talked to have to go through this not all the time, but often. According to them it is very cold-hearted. Muslim discrimination at airports, stores, anywhere - is just plain wrong.

People who don’t discriminate don’t see it unless they look. It happens frequently and if you look you may see it. Next time you see a woman walking down the street in a head scarf, not a turban, you may see the racism. However, the racism isn’t as bad as its been before and the people who are innocent are being treated as such. People are now opening their eyes and seeing the bad for the bad and the good for the good.

Ailing Vet Killed By Police

Ailing vet shot to death

 Kenneth Chamberlain

     Kenneth Chamberlain’s
          Marine picture

African American Kenneth Chamberlain, 68, was shot and killed by a white policeman. The killing occurred in November after police came to a call that Chamberlain had made by setting off his medical alert device. Chamberlain called a health center saying the police were at his door and he was not sick. He is then heard to ask the police to leave
Next the police shot a Taser and were trying to get in. At one point Chamberlain said "shoot me, shoot me, mother (expletive), shoot me” The police then forced their way in after a Taser failed. Photos show forced entry and blood. Then the officer shot at Chamberlain when he tried to resist.
This is what his son, also named Kenneth, had to say "He feared for his life," and "He kept asking them to go away and that he didn't need their help." He said his father was an old man who was sick and said police were not justified in forcing their way in when he had committed no crime. His niece Tanya said "I heard my uncle begging and pleading them to please leave him alone," "I could begin to almost hear fear in his voice." Chamberlain was a former marine who had respiratory problems so severe he couldn’t walk down stairs
Tanya also asked to talk with him, but police refused. Chamberlain’s family believes that he was treated differently because he was black. They said they could hear one of the policemen call him an N-Word. This is a tragedy and we hope the family the best.

April 29th,2012- The Atlanta Hawks are less than one minute away from blowing their 19 point lead then all of the sudden the Hawks get help from an unlikely source, a player. Its the Boston Celtics vs Atlanta Hawks in the first game of the first round of the eastern conference NBA playoffs. Its a close game and the Hawks crowd is going wild. All the players are tired but willing to give it their all. the Hawks up by four and the crowd is yelling “De-Fense,De-Fense!”. Celtics have ball. Celtic’s Rajon Rondo brings the ball down the court to Hawk territory, he passes to Brandon Bass however he is unable to get a grip of the ball and loses it. Bass and Josh Smith come together to try and get the ball. when they collided the ref called a foul on Brandon Bass, Rondo was furious.
Rondo started to argue to the ref about the fall, he wanted a jump ball. He stomped the ref and still yelling at him about the call, Quickly the ref calls “T” sign with his hand signaling for a technical foul. Rondo even more furious approaches the ref even closer now and bumps the ref with his chest. Rondo is now is now ejected from the game for having two technical fouls. The Hawks crowd starts to cheer cause the Celtics best point guard is out of the game.
After the ejection John Smith goes to the free throw line and makes two. The crowd goes nuts and also relieved, the final score is 83-74. Later the NBA review the foul and now Rondo is ejected from game 2 of the Celtics VS Hawks playoffs. I asked some of the 7th graders a few questions
First Question-What your reaction to the Rondo ejection?
    • “It was stupid on Rondos’ part- Jonah H
    • I was completely baffled- Drew T
    • I thought it was weird and stupid- Dyllon W
Second Question-Do you think he deserved the suspension?
    • Everyone up top said yes
Third Question-On a scale from one to ten how well did you know the rondo incident?
    • One said 9
    • Two said 8
These playoffs are hard and intense i understand why you would do that BUT as everyone says think before you do. If you don’t agree with the ref keep your cool, one moment in the game can change the outcome of it and when your team is down by four points with a minute left you don’t want to be the cause of it.

Boys vs Girls who knows more?

By Julia Kavalieros

Budget cut are affecting schools everywhere, and students are most affected. Although there are a number of students who are aware of this situation, it seems as though most of them don't really care. Humanities teacher Mrs. Dietrich says "It all depends on the student and their family. I think they should be aware though of how much their class is going to change by next year because they are the ones who will be ultimately affected."

I conducted an experiment to see just how aware students know about the situation.
I asked them these three questions;

What do you know about the budget cuts?

How will it change our school the following year?

And finally, Who knows more Boys or girls?

6/10 students said girls knew more on budget cuts than guys
I knew this would bring up some debate and here is the outcome; I asked 10 people, 5 girls and 5 boys. Four out of five girls said they knew more than boys. The other 1 said it's about equal. Then I asked the guys. Two of the boys said girls and the other said boys. The other two boys were completely unaware of what is going on, they didn't even know what it is!

I asked one person individually from each gender what they thought about the debate and their reasons why for voting the way they did.

Maddie Raleigh from Orange hall said, "Girls are totally more aware than boys. All boys care about is sports, and if they are nerds homework and calculators."

Next I asked AJ Hart from Red Hall and surprisingly enough he said almost the same thing! He said, "Girls definitely. Guys only really pay attention to sports and girls. Girls are more caring and stuff".

Why are girls more aware of this topic? Statistics have shown that girls mature faster there for, pay more attention to topics such as this one. That is why girls know more on this topic compared to boys. Sorry Guys but it seems as though girls win this round!

Childhood Obesity, affecting all of us.

Childhood Obesity, affecting all of us.

Junk Food
Childhood obesity is a terrible thing that over 1/3 of kids in the U.S have. The main cause of overweight or obese kids is eating too much unhealthy foods and exercising too little. Obesity is one of the easiest medical conditions to recognize but most difficult to treat. It starts with the kinds of foods you are putting in your body and how you are taking care of yourself. About 300,000 people die each year because of an unhealthy weight.  Obese children will stay obese unless they start to have a healthier diet.

I asked Mr. Vernon a P.E. teacher here at Stoller Middle School, what he thought about childhood obesity and here is what he said "Two things, you have to eat right, limit what you eat and activity. The biggest problem is the lack of exercise." Kelly Schenk a student here said "We have a large obesity rate because we have more access to cheap food that is unhealthy." You have to be aware of what you are putting in your body.

Unhealthy Food
Kids sometimes won't make the healthiest choices when they are hungry. They will choose to eat more junk food than a healthier snack. It depends on what kinds of foods are in your kitchen. Cheeper food is usually more unhealthy. It is more processed and not as fresh. There are healthier and more nutritious choices out there but kids won't always choose them. Some families can't afford to buy healthy foods or pay for a sports activity. And the child can't really help it.

Many Obese children get bullied because of their weight and structure. They will feel timid. Kids are not proud of being obese. Imagine being that little kid. You don't have much money and every time you go to school someone always makes a comment on your size. You don't have very many friends and you feel alone. That is an awful thing.

Also if you are obese you are more likely to have a higher risk for diseases like high cholesterol or high blood pressure. But there are some easy ways to prevent this. Just choose healthier choices. Instead of have fried chips for snack, have some crunchy carrots. Or instead of eating a bowl of ice cream have some frozen yogurt with fresh fruit. Also it is really important to remember to exercise at least everyday. And it is alright to have some junk food once in a while. Just not everyday. By having more nutritious options out there we can help lower childhood obesity! So those kids can be proud of who they are!
