Entertainment Died Wednesday

       Entertainment Died Wednesday
By: Kristina Mokalla
Dick Clark hosting with Ryan Seacrest on his New Years show in 2005.

People thought Dick Clark was an extraordinary man that brought us the world of entertainment. You know him from American Bandstand or as “America’s oldest teenager.”

At age 82 the one and only
Dick Clark dies from a heart attack at the hospital Wednesday in Santa Monica, California.

Paul Stanely the singer of Kiss said, “Was the face of rock and roll and its best ambassador. He championed Kiss when others turned away and was instrumental in breaking us.”

Connie Francis said she would have no career if it wasn’t for him and “he could make or break anybody,” but “he used that power with kindness.” If it weren’t for him we wouldn’t have a lot of things we have today. Such as MTV, American Idol, and much more.

Dick Clark once said, ”I don’t make culture, I sell it.

In 2004 he was hospitalized for a “mild” stroke. He missed his New York’s Eve show in 2005.

America’s beloved host obviously didn’t have a “mild” stroke. He returned in early 2006 with a slurred speech. Although, we didn’t have to say goodbye yet. His health gradually improved.

But when news struck that he died Wednesday morning many people tweeted farewell to their inspiration. Ryan Seacrest wrote how he was deeply saddened and how he was able to have the opportunity to host with him on his Clark’s Rockn’ Eve in 2005. Many other celebrities tweeted such as Mario Lopez, Jenny McCarthy, Joan Rivers, and more.

And now we ask ourselves, will entertainment ever be the same?

Return of the Mad Cow Diesase

Return of the Mad Cow Disease
By:Briana Keo-Williams
The cow and isn't infected with Bovine spongiform encephalopathy

Imagine your child or sibling laying in a hospital bed on the verge of death just because they ate a some tainted beef. Mad cow disease has been found in a Central Valley bovine. The cow"was never presented for slaughter for human consumption, so at no time presented a risk to the food supply or human health," said John Clifford, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's chief veterinarian. This cow was a dairy cow and mad cow disease cannot be passed down through milk. Central Valley assured the public that they will be testing/tracing every cow from the same parents and from the same area. Unlike the scare in England in 1922 it wasn’t from cow feed that was made from ground cow spinal cords in the feed but from a rare spontaneous case.  "If it turns out this cow is less than 14 years old, it proves my biggest concern: Cattle feed is still not protected from mad cow," Michael Hanson said."We still allow risky practices. You can't feed cows to cows directly. But you can feed cows to pigs and chickens and then feed them to cows." The USDA (United States department of agriculture) tests 40,000 cows every year for mad cow and in 2011 there was only 29 cases worldwide.Since 2003 Mad cow has been popping up all over the world but never in extreme case unlike in 1992 where 37,311 cases were found.

Metta World Peace elbows James Harden

                                            OKC vs. L.A Lakers
                                           Sunday April 22, 2012

                                              By: Tristen Walker

James Harden

It was Sunday April 22, 2012. The Lakers were playing OKC at The Staples Center in L.A California. The score was 47-45 OKC. It was in the second quarter. Metta World Peace just dunked the ball to tie it up. He was showing off by beating his chest and James Harden was right by him. Metta World Peace purposely elbowed James Harden right on the side of the head. Immediately right after the hit James Harden went down. The referees reviewed the play over. Metta World Peace got suspended and went to the locker room. After the half was over James Harden came back after the trainers checked him out and he got a concussion. When the game was over the Lakers had won the game. The next day the NBA commissioner suspended World Peace for seven games Tuesday, a penalty that could force him out of the entire first round of the playoffs, for the elbow he delivered to Harden’s head in a game against Oklahoma City on Sunday. New York AP David Stern said during a conference call that he took many things into account, including World Peace’s numerous past troubles. World Peace, who changed his name from Ron Artest, received an 86-game suspension in 2004- the longest ban for an on-court incident in NBA history- for jumping into the stands at the Palace of Auburn Hills in the Detroit suburbs to fight fans. I think that this article means to personalize because i think that Metta World Peace elbowed James Harden on purpose. He was just doing that to show off and as a result he got an NBA player hurt. Metta World Peace suspension will affect him when the playoffs start. Also may affect how the Lakers do without Metta World Peace. So overall i think that he did it on purpose. I hope it does not happen again.

Blazers column on owner Paul Allen leads to an angry Paul Allen

This argument started when John Canzano who is a oregonlive.com blogger, asked Paul Allen who is the owner of the Blazers if he was in or out. John Canzano basically asked Paul Allen if he even cared about the team and if he wanted to sell them. Allen responded harshly. He called John Canzano an octopus that knows nothing about the Blazers.

Blazers.com's twitter page then tweeted the incident so their 75,000 fans can see. Many fans commented on this incident such as "fight fight!", "angry billionaire" and "Paul Allen has no sense of humor. The picture of the octopuses that Paul Allen described as " the four ways to read a John Canzano article"are very dumb looking which is an indication that he is calling John Canzano dumb.

Paul Allen also put quotes underneath the four pictures of the octopuses that said "Stage 1, uh oh another John Canzano column."
Stage 1 of Paul Allen explaining what reading a John Canzano article is like.
"Stage 2, wow, even more bombastic and grandiose as usual."
Stage 2 of Paul Allen explaining how reading a John Canzano article is like.

"Stage 3, he's frolicking again with unnamed sources and their murky agendas."
Stage 3 of Paul Allen explaining how it is like to explain a John Canzano article.

"Stage 4, movin' on… (Does his editor even bother to read these?).
Stage 4 of Paul Allen explaining how reading a John Canzano article is like.

John Canzano responded with quotes such as "I could own the Blazers better then Paul Allen can" and "Who the heck insults someone with pictures of four octopuses."When asked about the incident, Blazers guard Wesley Matthews said "I know this is all nonsense and not serious at all." That shows that Paul Allen and John Canzano are not fond of each other and they got into a big online disagreement.

$40 Million Budget Cut Is it worth it?

$40 Million Budget Cut
Is it worth it?
By Jaume Martinez Calvo

The Beaverton School District is having a budget cut like no other. The $40 million budget cut will be mostly on people says the school district super intendent.
"This cut would be like loosing all of stollers orange hall without loosing the students" says Ms.Clements the media lit teacher for stoller middle school. Nearly 400 students are in orange hall if they have no teachers then the rest of the classes would be around 50 people each.  In Mr.Wilsie's class there are already 40 students losing orange hall would not only make his job harder but it would make the schools job harder. "I'm already having 4 unpaid days now it might be a whole week" Ms.Clements states that the budget cut might not just fire people but not pay already hired people.
This janitor will most likely not be cleaning the gym next year.
These computers will probably not be here the
next year.
Specialty classes might be lost, schedules would change, core teachers will loose the ability to teach because of so many people in the class. The education level will drop drastically. Imagine a class with 45 social teenagers and one teacher t try to control all of them.
"Not only public but private schools will also be affected because the students family will not be willing to pay the tuition and the schools will be getting less money" Ms.Clements clearly says that the budget cuts will affect every school in the district in a negative way.
Janitors will also be lost and schools will be dirtier,  teachers will also have to clean up the classroom which was never in their job description.

P.I.P.A, S.O.P.A. Or NO-PA

Protesters gather in Times Square to oppose the S.O.P.A. and P.I.P.A.
bill.

S.O.P.A, P.I.P.A. or N.O.P.A.

Are you with or against sopa or pipa... Or Neither?

As many know, Protect Internet Privacy Act, or P.I.P.A., is a safety, privacy, and copyright law for public websites all over the internet that was set in motion by the U.S. congress, and shown to the public, on December 17, 2011. Internet privacy is a big issue to users of many world-wide used websites such as Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, and Wikipedia.

The acknowledgment of “Privacy” goes to a wide variety from safety from hackers on the web, to copyright laws that involves music, pictures, and other documents that are not(and sometimes are) protected by Copyrights (©) that are used on many different blogs, facebook pages, twitter accounts, and many other public online sites. This act caused thousands of well known sites to power down for 24 hours as an action to protest the bill, leading to petitions signed by millions of people of America to oppose the P.I.P.A. This started S.O.P.A., which stands for Stop Online Privacy Act. The interruption of the websites also made six senators back down from P.I.P.A. and S.O.P.A.

But what if you just want it to end and there be no disagreement? Well, NO-pa was created by viewers of the protests for P.I.P.A. and S.O.P.A. wanting to go against the argument. Having the entire bill stop would make websites maintain their statuses and URLs’ and the internet would essentially ‘go-back-to-normal’. Could everyone simply forget the protests and petitions that so many citizens invested their time and money in? Surveys show that about 60% of people have either forgotten about  P.I.P.A. and S.O.P.A. or had no idea what it was. Not to mention that an estimated 75% interview about P.I.P.A. and S.O.P.A. didn’t care about it anymore and thought that it won’t affect them anymore. Considering that Wikipedia, Youtube, and the other websites that blacked out for protesting P.I.P.A. and S.O.P.A, are now back and running as usual, life can go on as if the bill was never considered by the US government.

One Direction v.s One Direction

The band members Niall Horan,Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne, and Harry Styles tried out for the X Factor UK. They were being voted off when simon cowell called them back on stage and told them," You would be better in a group" they called themselves one direction. They got third place. Now they have the number one album in 18 countries around the world.  In 2011 another band called One Direction from california sewed them for one million dollars. The band members Sean O'Leary, Isaiah  Chaves-Pickett,Scott Nagareda, and Adam Davis say that they had the name first. They had the name in 2009 and the UK one direction got the name in 2010. Sony music and syco ignored the plaintiff rights of the US one direction's name.
This is the UK One Direction
This is the US One Direction

I asked some students if they should be sewed, “No they shouldn't because the US One Direction isn't as famous as the UK One Direction. Also the UK 1D has a lot of fans.” says Maggie Harder. Olivia Neal said “I've never heard of the US One Direction, and the UK one direction already has a business going.” They have resolved the solution a little. The UK One Direction agreed to add  UK to the front of their name.

Has Bullying Gone Too Far?

A kid being bullied.
Has Bullying Gone Too Far?

The bullying we are used to is the stealing pencils, calling names, etc. Modern bullying can sometimes lead to death... When people cyber bully, physical bully, intimidates others, they turn down somebody’s self-confidence.

Each day kids around the world are scared to go to school because of bullying problems. 77% of kids say they have been bullied, 14% of those kids say it was abusive bullying. 282,000 are physically attacked in secondary schools each month. Two main reasons bullying occurs is social status and appearance. The definition of bullying is To use superior strength or influence to intimidate (someone), typically to force him or her to do what one wants.

I asked Anjali Panikar what she was going to do to stop bullying “Well if I see bullying happening in the halls I would stand up to that bully and say ‘stop right there’ and be like’ you are bullying and that is not right.’ I think bullying is a terrible terrible thing and I think the reason why people bully is to cover him or herself. “

I asked Madison Giovanni what she thinks bullying is“ It’s like when people are teased or harassed, for being a certain race, sexuality, or if your are smarter than people, or if you participate in class more than others, “

I asked Teagan White what she thinks bullying is”Bullying can be anything from a simple tease to physical bullying; it depends on the person’s idea too.”

I asked Emily Purkey what she thinks bullying is “It’s terrible, bullying is really bad. I think bullies are people who have been hurt themselves, but that’s no excuse to use your anger on other kids”.

I asked a teacher what she thinks of bullying, “I think it’s not good, and can be prevented. People should be inclusive with everyone when you start excluding people that is when bullying happens. Bullying is bad bad”

Everyone’s answer is different but they are describing their own thought of bullying. Everyone has a different idea about bullying, but they all know how bad it is. When you are at the point where your bullying has started the other kid to think about killing himself you have bullied too much and it is not a playful tease anymore. You have to think about how you would feel if you were that kid.

Obesity the Childhood Epidemic

Obesity the Childhood Epidemic
By; David Bemis
Obesity has become an epidemic in the US. Some of the obese adolescents today will lose limbs and vital digits when they're in there 30’s due to type 2 diabetes which main cause is obesity. In the next ten years 45% of children will be insulin dependant. 822 people die everyday in the US due to obesity. All of this can be stopped.
The cause of obesity is eating high calorie high fat, and high sugar food with little or no exercise. Often big food corporations will put lovable characters such as shrek on boxes of  unhealthy food. These characters will also be in health food commercials or in a public service announcements (PSA) so kids think if shrek tells me to eat healthy and he’s on a box of Coco Puffs then coco puffs are healthy. This ideally would hook kids at a young age for life and will get them to eat unhealthy food and think it’s healthy. An example of this is when the government made a psa shrek, donkey, and puss in boots were in it telling kids to eat healthy.  Shrek said this in the PSA, “eat healthy like me”.This will make kids think that if Shrek is on a box of something then it must be healthy because he is healthy. However Shrek alone is also advertised McDonalds, Twinkies, Frosted Flakes, Ding Dongs, Ice Cream, Frozen Waffles, Brownies, Soda, Cake, Cookie, CoCo Puffs, ect. This is why T.V is also an extremely big part of obesity. Four in five ads on T.V during Saturday morning cartoons are junk food ads. The commercials will usually be of a child doing something boring, like homework, and then Ronald McDonald will come in and he will make everything happy and fun. This make kids think that if they eat McDonalds then this will happen to them. T.V ads like this makes kids want to buy all the junk food. T.V also keeps kids from exercising often. The average american child watches three hours of T.V a day. It will be bed time by the time a child has done their homework, had dinner, and watch 3 hours of T.V.
All of these things must change if we are to stop the obesity crisis. Children shouldn’t be watching this much T.V, child directed advertising should be monitored, and we must get better food for our children. Plus, the biggest one of all children need to  exercise more.

Cosplaying: Virtual to Reality

                                                       By Heather Barren

Everything is crowded. Walking through is difficult and you're starting to get hot. The sun beats down on the large windows, and cameras flash and people pose. You look around, seeing people everywhere. Then someone taps you lightly on the shoulder. You turn around suddenly to see who it is. Someone is holding a camera, and they ask you for a picture, you're their favorite character. You are in a convention. You are cosplaying. Cosplayers are involved in a world all their own, from private photoshoots to large conventions containing over 20,000 people like them. Cosplayers bring in a world that should only be fictional. They dress as their favorite characters from comic books, anime, books and movies. The trend began in Japan, but spread to countries around the world. Those who cosplay spend time and money to make their costume perfect, and flaws are often never overlooked. "I am very passionate about every character that I cosplay [...] It's a great and unique way of expressing one's self without being one's self." says Catlin Beards, An avid cosplayer.

Felicia Grundler putting on her wig and getting into character

Most of the time, hotel rooms are turned into a make shift studio. People often have to put the finishing touches on a wig, or resewing a patch on a shirt. They stay up until 4:00 AM with fellow friends and cosplayers just to finish it up the day before the con. Usually, you can hardly tell if the costume was finished the day before, or 5 months before hand. All the hotel rooms have crazy styled wigs scattered around on headstands, garments hanging carefully on hangers, and large props leaning against the wall. And often enough, there is a suitcase used only for shoes! You never travel lightly, but this allows the cosplayer to change into multiple outfits through out the day.

A wig mid-style

There is also another form of cosplaying, which is crossplaying. It is basically the same, although with different genders. A girl is a guy, a guy a girl. Lots of cosplayer girls prefer being guys over girls, because some characters require to show more skin, and not everyone is comfortable with that. "[...] it does get uncomfortable after a while, especially when some of the creepier people ask for pictures or stare at you blatantly," says Jackie Ohh.

Whether it comes down to carrying around a large scepter made out of styrofoam and painted gold, or wearing a bright green wig that goes down to your knees, cosplaying is what makes people happy. "I also enjoy the challenge of seeing if I can make this design that shouldn't or couldn't exist in real life and make it so." Brennan West says.

A legally blind Athlete sues for the rule of having to wear blackout glasses  leaving them temporarily sightless in an effort to "level the playing field". The lawsuit was filed on Wednesday in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan by Aaron Scheidies. He is 30 years and he says the rule violates the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. "Poses substantial danger to not only the competitor but those around them," the complaint says. "It is illegal to require Aaron to wear blackout glasses that no able-bodied person would have to wear as a condition of receiving reasonable accommodation in a triathlon," said Richard Bernstein, Scheidies' lawyer. The glasses that make people have to go into darkness, have been required for athletes that are sight-challenged, according to Bernstein. "USA Triathlon is discriminating against legally blind competitors stripping them of their dignity and depriving them of their ability to participate in the athletic activity they love," says Bernstein who was blind since he was born. " "ITU is committed to having the new system ready by 2013, which will result in a full revision of the ITU competition rules," said the Vancouver, British Columbia-based group. The group that governs more than 140 affiliated national federations including USA Triathlon.
Scheidies says ITU and USA Triathlon have made promises on this before and doesn't believe that is will change anytime soon.
Scheidies said," When I tried running with the blackout glasses with a guide, I hit my head on a pole, fell; into a ditch and ran off the road several times all in a two-minute time span. It was so scary and brought tears to my eyes. I felt defeated and less of a human being."

People who chose not to wear blackout glasses have been disqualified to run in the race because they didn't follow the rules of the race.

Apple's Amazing Stock Increase

  Apple's Amazing Stock Increase

Apple's stock with a value of $600 per stock with
an increase of more than 2.5 precent.
We all know the great success that Apple has had over the years, with the iPad coming out and the new iPhone 4S selling out faster than ever before. Apple's stock was always high and made its shareholders grin when they observed it. But we've never seen something like this. Apple's stock is going up to a booming more than $600 per stock.  Finance analysts foresee the stock going up to even $750 to $800 in the next couple of months. The most the stock has ever been before this year was in 2011 with a value of around
$400 per stock.

Many people are surprised that the stock is so high. They were sure that after the devastating death of Steve Job, that the company will slowly decline. But the fact is that the company has never been better, with an estimated worth of $110 billion. Many share holders say that they should increase the dividend, the money the company gives to the shareholders. Others say that they should use the money to increase their business and expand to different locations.

“The best thing they can do is [make] steady increases in the dividend,” said Larry Haverty," “There's plenty of room for improvement in the payout…Steady increases maybe once every six months and push the stock up between 2.5 and 4 percent…"

Apple stocks increased around 10 percent last Wednesday stopping the five day losing streak. One reason people say apple's stock has increased is the new iPad. The first iPad came out back in 2010 along with the iPhone 4. Both products making a groundbreaking impact on the company and the stock. But even then the stock wasn't as a high as it is now. The new iPad was never as groundbreaking as the first and second, so what is the source of Apple's great success? Some say its management, others say its just the special brand called Apple.

NFL Says Goodbye to Reebok, Hello to Nike

NFL Says Goodbye to Reebok, Hello to Nike
By Ryan Kister

NFL fans all over the United States became a little worried to hear their favorite team might be in a fully redesigned uniform from Nike. No need to fret fans, Nike didn’t create another Ducks makeover.
Last season the NFL used Reebok as their sponsor for the uniforms until Nike took over Reebok earlier this spring.
“You look good, you play good,” said Jermichael Finley, who plays tight end for the Green Bay Packers.
Most of the NFL’s teams didn’t change drastically. Nike only made minor changes such as larger logos and adding the Nike swish.
This is the Seattle Seahawks new jersey
One team took advantage of the makeover.  The Seattle Seahawks thought this was an excellent opportunity to start a rebranding campaign for Seattle. This included neon green trim down their pants and numbers. All of the Seattle players approved their new uniforms after Kam Chancellor, a defensive back for the Seahawks, modeled it.
“Seattle has the hottest uniforms in the NFL right now,” said Saints running back Pierre Thomas. “So I’m a little jealous. But I still love my all black. I think it looks nice.”
Players also wanted these new uniforms to be as light as possible.
“They don’t want anything to be weighing them down. They want to be faster,” said Todd Van Horne, Nike’s creative director for football and baseball.
The second most important thing was fit. “They (the players) want them to stretch and move with them.” Van Horne also stated.
Finley later stated about these new uniforms “It clings to your body so nobody can hold you; it's a real nice advantage because you get a lot of grabbing on the field."
This change from Reebok to Nike seems to have been a good thing for the NFL players as well as the fans.
